Our Story

Three centuries of gathering.

Death of the Fox Brewing Company takes its name from a colonial tavern that stood on this road three hundred years ago. We're still doing the same job: giving people a good reason to stay a while.

Brewed mindfully. Served kindfully. It started as a brewery with a roaster in the corner, and became a family of rooms across South Jersey.

To be clear about the name: the original Death of the Fox tavern stood about a half mile from where we brew, at the far end of Whiskey Mill Road. We took the name and the spirit of the place — the hospitality, and the long walk down the mill road that got you there. If you like the deep history, this local archive tells the full tavern story.

We are New Jersey's first and only craft brewery and coffee roastery. Sixteen taps of beer brewed in Clarksboro, coffee roasted onsite in every room, and food built for lingering. Under one fox: the brewery and tavern in Clarksboro, High Grounds Coffee Roasters in Glassboro, and High Grounds Lounge in Carneys Point.

Every location roasts, brews, or bakes something in-house. The pastries come from neighbors. The playlist skips the algorithm. Wellness is an ingredient, not an afterthought — protein coffee, smoothies, and matcha sit on the menu next to the stout.

Milestones

From tavern to three rooms.

  1. 1700s

The Death of the Fox Inn

A tavern called the Death of the Fox stands in Gloucester County — a stagecoach stop known for hospitality, and for the fox hunts that gave it a name. We borrowed the name, not the ground: our brewery sits about a half mile away, down Whiskey Mill Road.

    The company is established

Death of the Fox Brewing Company is founded in Clarksboro at the Villages of Whiskey Mill — three years of buildout, licensing, and recipe work before a single pint is poured.

    Doors open to the public

On August 14, 2017 we open as the first craft brewery in New Jersey to also be a coffeehouse — beer brewed in the building, coffee served beside it, though we weren't roasting our own beans yet.

    The roastery arrives

We install our own roaster and become a microroastery as well as a microbrewery — New Jersey's first and only craft brewery and coffee roastery under one roof.

The fight for brewers' rights

Five years. One signature.

New Jersey's small breweries spent years operating under rules no other business in the state had to follow. We decided not to accept them quietly.

In 2019 the state issued a special ruling that told licensed craft breweries how many events they could hold each year, whether they could show a televised game, whether they could hand a guest a menu, and whether they could pour a cup of coffee alongside their own beer. For a brewery that also roasts coffee and hosts its neighbors, those limits weren't paperwork — they were a threat to the business we had built.

So we fought it. We testified in Trenton, organized with other breweries, met with legislators from both parties, brought our guests into the conversation, and kept telling the same simple story: we are small manufacturers and community rooms, and we should be allowed to welcome people the way any restaurant or tavern can.

In January 2024 the Governor signed legislation expanding brewers' rights across New Jersey — lifting the event caps and restrictions that had held back every small brewery in the state. It was the culmination of five years of work, and our brewery was proud to help lead it.

The result is the room you walk into today: coffee in the morning, beer at night, live music on the weekend, and no one telling us we have to choose.
